Xavier And Georgetown Primed For Upsets

Mar 16, 2011 10:16 AM

Marquette and USC have more than a 70 percent chance to upset 6th seeds Xavier and Georgetown, according to statistician John Ezekowitz, who works as a consultant for the Phoenix Suns.

Accounting for turnover rates, rebounding rates, and strength of schedule, Ezekowitz’s model is specifically geared towards predicting first round upsets.

Ezekowitz correctly predicted Murray State over Vanderbilt and foresaw St. Mary’s run to the Sweet 16 in last year’s tournament.

"It's consistent with what we were told," Georgetown Coach John Thompson III said. "We had anticipated him being able to start full practice this week and anticipated him being able to play on Thursday."

The Hoyas went 0-4 without Wright, with the once efficient offense averaging just 51.1 points per game on 33.9 percent shooting.

Walker Scores 28, UConn Beats Georgetown 79-62

Mar 9, 2011 10:41 PM

Kemba Walker scored 28 points to lead UConn to a 79-62 win against Georgetown in the second round of the Big East tournament.

Jamal Coombs-McDaniel added 28; Jeremy Lamb scored 11 points; and Shabazz Napier had 7 for UConn.

Walker has 54 points in the first two games of the Big East tournament, making 18 of 33 shots.

"When you have No. 15 on your team, usually you're in pretty good shape," Calhoun said. "Kemba was terrific. He understood where his teammates were, made them better at points and just made some sensational plays regardless of who, what and how they were playing him."

Chris Wright Expected To Return To Hoyas For NCAA Tournament

Mar 9, 2011 10:14 AM

Georgetown point guard Chris Wright missed the past 2 ½ gams with a broken bone in his left hand.

"He's progressing as we hoped he would," Coach John Thompson III said. "Obviously, he's limited in what he can do. But it's good to have him back out there and participating in parts of practice. Absolutely we are expecting him to return."

Thompson said the target date for Wright's return remains the first round of next week's NCAA tournament.

"I doubt very seriously if he will play this week [despite] how well his recovery is going," Thompson said. "One of the reasons he's not going to participate this week is to make [the NCAA tournament] a possibility."

The Hoyas have lost three straight since Wright injured his hand against Cincinnati.
